Meeting resistance.

Friday, September 28th, 2007

I listen to NPR quite a bit, and here in southern California, we are blessed with two equally great stations, a mere .6 away from each other on the dial.

One of them (forgive me for not knowing which!) broadcasts a show called The Story out of WUNC in North Carolina.  Each time I’ve caught their show, I’ve enjoyed it, and last night was no exception.

They interviewed documentary filmmakers Molly Bingham and Steve Connors, whose film “Meeting Resistance” chronicles thier time spent with an Iraqi man known only as The Teacher.

I’ve been a news junkie for years now, and consider myself pretty well-educated with regards to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  But the information gleaned from this one show was amazingly revalatory to me.  And whether or not you agree with the motives and tactics of The Teacher and his other “resistance fighters,” knowing their motivations, their reasons, their feelings, makes understanding the insurgents our troops face all the more possible.

Newscasters, Congress-critters, bloggers, etc., all expound on how to solve the problems of the insurgents, but I fear that without the education that this broadcast provides, all might be talking just a smidge of their asses.

Do check them both out!
